Early Life and Education
Ernest Logie Danson was born on June 14, 1880, in Arbroath, Scotland. His family had a strong connection to the church. His father, Myers Danson, was a senior church leader called the Dean of Aberdeen and Orkney.
Ernest went to school at Trinity College, Glenalmond. After that, he studied at Aberdeen University. These schools helped prepare him for his future work in the church.
Becoming a Church Leader
Ernest Danson decided to follow in his father's footsteps and join the church. He became a deacon in 1906. A deacon is a church official who helps the priest. The next year, in 1907, he became a priest.
His first job as a priest was helping out at St Paul's Cathedral, Dundee. This type of assistant role is called a curacy.
Work as a Missionary Bishop
In 1906, Ernest Danson began an important part of his career. He became a Missionary Priest in Southeast Asia. Missionaries are people who travel to different places to spread their faith.
He worked there for many years. Eventually, he became a Bishop of Labuan and Sarawak. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the church who oversees a specific area, called a diocese.
Returning to Scotland
After his time in Southeast Asia, Ernest Danson returned to England. He took on several new roles. From 1931 to 1938, he was a Canon Residentiary at Carlisle Cathedral. A canon is a priest who is part of the staff of a cathedral. During this time, he was also an Assistant Bishop of Carlisle.
Later, he moved to Edinburgh, Scotland. He became the Provost of St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh. A provost is the head of a cathedral. He also served as an Assistant Bishop of Edinburgh.
Leading the Church in Scotland
In 1939, Ernest Danson was chosen to be the main Bishop of Edinburgh. This meant he was in charge of the church in the Edinburgh area.
Just four years later, in 1943, he was elected Primus of Scotland. The Primus is the most senior bishop and leader of the entire Scottish Episcopal Church. This was a very important position.
Sadly, his health began to decline. Because of his illness, he had to step down as Primus in May 1946. He also resigned from his role as Bishop of Edinburgh in September of that year. Ernest Logie Danson passed away on December 9, 1946.
