Lois Elizabeth Mitchell (born June 22, 1939) is a Canadian businesswoman and a person who gives money to good causes (a philanthropist). She served as the 18th lieutenant governor of Alberta from 2015 to 2020. The lieutenant governor is the King's representative in a Canadian province. Lois Mitchell was chosen for this important role by the Governor General of Canada, David Johnston. This decision was made on the advice of the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper. Before this, Mitchell was a teacher and started her own consulting company. She is also known for organizing many events and volunteering a lot in Calgary, along with her late husband, Doug Mitchell.

Lois Mitchell's Early Life and Career
Lois Mitchell was born and grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia. She studied physical education at the University of British Columbia and finished her studies around 1961. After university, she worked as a teacher in British Columbia for two years. Later, she moved to Calgary, Alberta.
Starting Her Own Businesses
In Calgary, Lois Mitchell became a successful businesswoman. She founded and was a senior partner at Rainmaker Global Business Development. This company helps other businesses with marketing and advice. She also became the president of Amherst Consultants.
Community Involvement and Awards
Lois Mitchell is very well-known in Calgary for her community work. She has been part of many important groups. For example, she helped start Crime Stoppers Calgary, which helps solve crimes. She was also a governor of the Canadian Women's Hockey Association. She supported sports and helped organize many hockey events with her husband, Doug.
In 2012, Lois and Doug Mitchell created the Doug and Lois Mitchell Outstanding Calgary Artist Award. This award celebrates talented artists in Calgary. Lois also helped create an endowment in 2007 to support the University of British Columbia's Women's Ice Hockey team.
Serving as Lieutenant Governor
On May 20, 2015, Lois Mitchell was chosen to be the lieutenant governor of Alberta. She officially started her role on June 12, 2015. As the King's representative in Alberta, she was called "Her Honour" while in office. After her term, she is known as "the Honourable" for the rest of her life. Her job was to represent the King and perform duties like opening legislative sessions and giving royal assent to new laws.
Lois Mitchell's Personal Life
Lois Mitchell has received several important awards for her contributions. In 2012, she was appointed to the Order of Canada. This is one of the highest honors a Canadian citizen can receive. In the same year, she also received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. This medal celebrated Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne.
In 1998, she won the Calgary Women of Distinction Award. In 2008, the City of Calgary named her Citizen of the Year. Lois Mitchell was married to Douglas Mitchell from 1961 until he passed away in 2022. Doug was a lawyer and a former Canadian football player. He later became a commissioner of the Canadian Football League. Lois and Doug had four children: two daughters and two sons. Lois Mitchell's family has a history of public service; her grandfather, Tom Mackie, was the chief of the Calgary Police Service from 1909 to 1912. She has Scottish heritage.
