Island History
Loks Land Island has an interesting history, especially with explorers and its role in defense.
Early Explorations
The island was visited by an English explorer named Martin Frobisher in the 1570s. He named the island after Michael Lok, a rich businessman from London. Michael Lok helped pay for Frobisher's trips to the Arctic.
During Frobisher's first trip, his crew found some rocks that they thought contained gold. This made Michael Lok very excited, and he helped fund two more expeditions. However, these later trips did not find any real gold. This caused Michael Lok to lose a lot of money and almost go bankrupt.
The DEW Line Station
In the past, Loks Land Island was important for Canada's defense. It hosted one of the stations for the Distant Early Warning Line, often called the DEW Line. This was a network of radar stations built during the Cold War.
The DEW Line was created to detect if any enemy aircraft were flying over the Arctic towards North America. The station on Loks Land Island had the code number BAF-4A. These stations were very important for protecting Canada and the United States during that time.
