Meet the 1972 Tube Stock Trains
The 1972 Stock trains are a familiar sight for many people in London. They are called "deep-level tube" trains because they run in the smaller, deeper tunnels of the Underground system. These trains were built by a company called Metro-Cammell. They have been serving Londoners for over 50 years, making them some of the oldest trains still in regular use on the Underground.
Why These Trains Were Built
In the early 1970s, the London Underground needed more trains. Specifically, the Northern line was short on its 1959 Tube Stock trains. To fix this problem quickly, new trains were ordered. These new trains were designed to be very similar to the 1967 Stock trains, which were already running on the Victoria Line. This helped to speed up their construction.
Life on the Tracks: Where They Run
The 1972 Stock trains have traveled on several different lines over the years.
- Northern Line: They first started running on the Northern line in 1972. They helped carry passengers there for many years.
- Jubilee Line: For a short time, between 1979 and 1984, some of these trains also ran on the Jubilee line.
- Bakerloo Line: Since 1972, the 1972 Stock trains have been a key part of the Bakerloo line. Today, this is the main line where you can still ride on these historic trains.
Inside the 1972 Stock
When you step inside a 1972 Stock train, you might notice its classic design. Over the years, some of these trains have been updated inside. The seats and lighting might look a bit different depending on when they were last refurbished. Even though they are old, they are kept in good condition to make sure they are safe and comfortable for passengers. Some parts of these trains have even been turned into special exhibits, like a train cab you can visit!
