Lone Horn (also known as Hewáŋžiča in the Lakota language, or "One Horn") was an important chief of the Minneconjou Lakota people. He was born around 1790 in what is now South Dakota. He led the Wakpokinyan band, which means "Flies Along the Stream."

Lone Horn had several famous family members. His sons were Spotted Elk (who later became known as Big Foot) and Touch the Clouds. His sister was named Rattling Blanket Woman, and the famous warrior Crazy Horse was his nephew. Lone Horn also signed the Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868, which was an agreement between the U.S. government and several Native American tribes.

Lone Horn passed away in 1877 near Bear Butte due to old age. After his death, his adopted son, Spotted Elk, became the chief of the Minneconjou. Sadly, Spotted Elk and many of his people were later killed in the tragic Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890.

George Catlin Paints Chief One Horn

In 1832, a famous artist named George Catlin painted a portrait of Chief One Horn. This painting was done at Fort Pierre, South Dakota. Catlin later wrote about his experience meeting One Horn.

Catlin described One Horn as a "middle-aged man" with a "noble face." He was very impressed by One Horn's appearance and strength. One Horn told Catlin that he got his name from a small shell he wore around his neck. This shell had been passed down from his father, and One Horn valued it more than anything else he owned. This shows how much respect and love these people had for their ancestors.

Catlin also mentioned One Horn's impressive clothing. It was made from elk skins, beautifully decorated with porcupine quills. His long hair was styled in a unique way, making it look a bit like a Turkish turban.

Before becoming a chief, One Horn was known for his amazing athletic skills. He was incredibly fast and strong. Catlin wrote that One Horn could even run down a buffalo on foot and shoot an arrow right into its heart! He was the fastest runner in his tribe and always won races.
