The Long Beach International Film Festival (LBIFF) is a special event that celebrates the art of making movies. It started in 2012 and happens every year in Long Beach and Rockville Centre, New York. This festival shows many different kinds of films. These include short films, fictional stories, and documentaries. The main goal of the LBIFF is to show movies that offer new ideas and different ways of looking at the world.

Festival History

The Long Beach International Film Festival first began in the late summer of 2012. During this very first event, nine short films and documentaries were shown.

A big storm called Hurricane Sandy hit Long Beach on October 29, 2012. This storm caused a lot of flooding. The only movie theater in the city, Long Beach Cinemas, was destroyed. Because the theater was gone and the city was rebuilding, the 2013 film festival was at risk. However, the festival's founders, Ingrid Dodd and Craig Weintraub, worked hard. They received a $20,000 grant from Nassau County. This money helped them organize a smaller festival program for 2013.

Each year, the festival holds a special part of its program called "Shorts on the Beach." These film showings happen right on the sands of Long Beach. They are open to everyone and are completely free to attend.

The 2015 festival took place in the City of Long Beach and Rockville Centre from September 24 to 27. During that event, the festival showed more than 50 films from around the world. These included full-length story films, documentaries, short films, animated movies, and films made by students.

Awards and Recognition

The Long Beach International Film Festival is a competition where filmmakers can win awards. The festival gives out awards in many different categories. The "Gala Awards Ceremony" is held on the Sunday night of the festival. Awards are given based on decisions by a jury, special festival honors, and audience votes.
