History of Long Pine
Long Pine was started around 1876. It grew quickly when the railroad came to the area in 1881. The city got its name from a nearby stream called Long Pine Creek.
Long Pine was an important center for the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company. This railway line was known as the Cowboy Line. At one time, Long Pine had a large roundhouse, a turntable, and facilities to service steam trains.
When diesel locomotives became popular, these steam train facilities were no longer needed. They were moved away. Eventually, the entire railway line was closed. The last train came through Long Pine in 1992. The old railway path is now a fun trail called the Cowboy Trail.
