History of Longford

Longford was started in 1870. The first post office opened in the city five years later, in 1875.

Railroad History

In 1887, a major railroad company called the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built a train line. This line went through Longford. It connected Neva, Kansas, to Superior, Nebraska.

Later, in 1996, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe company joined with another railroad. It became known as the BNSF Railway. Even today, many local people still call it the "Santa Fe" railroad.

Longford is a small city. It covers about 0.15 square miles (0.40 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the city limits.
