Loraine is a small, quiet place in Kern County, California. It's known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of a larger county, but they don't have their own separate town government or mayor. Instead, the county government helps manage things like roads and services for Loraine.

This community is located near a spot where Indian Creek flows into Caliente Creek. It's about 12 miles north of a town called Tehachapi. Loraine sits at an elevation of about 2,671 feet, which is quite high up!

A Look at Loraine's Past

Loraine has an interesting history, including a couple of different names! Before it was called Loraine, it was known as Paris and then Paris-Loraine.

Early Settlers and the Post Office

The very first people to settle in this area were miners from France and a region called Alsace. They came looking for valuable minerals, hoping to find their fortune.

A post office, which is where people send and receive mail, first opened in Paris in 1903. This was an important step for the community, as it made communication much easier. In 1912, the post office changed its name to Loraine, matching the new name of the community. It closed for a short time in 1918 but then reopened in 1922. However, it closed for good in 1926. Even though the post office is gone, Loraine remains a small, historic part of Kern County.
