Lord George Augustus Cavendish was an important British nobleman and politician who lived from about 1727 to 1794. He was a member of the powerful House of Cavendish family. As a politician, he helped make decisions for Great Britain. He was also a Member of Parliament (MP), meaning he was elected to represent people in the government. He was also part of the Privy Council (PC), a group of advisors to the King.

Early Life and Family

Lord George Augustus Cavendish was born in London around 1727. He was the second son of William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire, and his wife, Catherine Hoskins. A very important person, King George II, was his godfather. This shows how important his family was.

He went to school in Chesterfield and later studied at St John's College, Cambridge, which is a famous university.

Holker Hall Estate

In 1753, Lord George inherited a large estate called Holker Hall. This beautiful property was located in what was then Lancashire. He loved nature and worked to improve the park around the hall. He planted many special and unusual trees there. Some of these included Lebanese cedar trees, which were grown from seeds sent to him by a friend from Lebanon.

A Career in Politics

Lord George Augustus Cavendish began his political career in 1751. He was elected to Parliament for the area of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis.

In 1754, he took on an even more important role. He became the Member of Parliament for Derbyshire, which was a traditional seat for his family. He held this position for almost 40 years, until he passed away.

During his time in government, he held several important jobs:

  • From 1761 to 1762, he was the Comptroller of the Household. This meant he managed the royal household's expenses.
  • In 1762, he became a member of the Privy Council. This group advised the King on important matters.
  • From 1766 to 1782, he served as the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire. This was a high-ranking official who represented the King in the county.

Later Life and Passing

Lord George Augustus Cavendish passed away suddenly in May 1794. He was on his way back to London from his home at Holker Hall when he died. After his death, Holker Hall was passed down to his younger brothers.
