Lord Henry FitzGerald (born July 30, 1761 – died July 9, 1829) was an important person in Irish and British politics. He was the fourth son of the 1st Duke of Leinster and Duchess of Leinster. His younger brother was Lord Edward FitzGerald, who was known as a revolutionary.
Life and Career
Lord Henry FitzGerald joined the British Army. He became a lieutenant in the 66th Foot regiment in 1788. The next year, in 1779, he became a captain in the 85th Foot regiment. This regiment was sent to Jamaica to help protect the area during the American Revolutionary War.
While in Jamaica, he was promoted to major in 1781. By 1783, he became a lieutenant-colonel and took charge of his regiment. After the war, the 85th regiment was no longer needed. In 1789, he became a captain and lieutenant-colonel in the 2nd Foot Guards. He left the army in 1792.
Lord Henry FitzGerald was also a Member of Parliament (MP). This means he was elected to represent people in the government. He represented different areas in Ireland:
- He was an MP for Kildare Borough from 1783 to 1790.
- Then he represented Athy from 1790 to 1791.
- From 1790 to 1798, he was an MP for Dublin City in the Irish House of Commons.
In 1806, he became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of important advisors to the King or Queen. From 1807 to 1814, Lord Henry was an MP for Kildare in the Parliament of the United Kingdom. He also worked as one of the main Postmasters General of Ireland from 1806 to 1807.
He was a member of the Kildare Street Club in Dublin. Lord Henry FitzGerald passed away at Boyle Farm in Thames Ditton, England, on July 9, 1829.
Family Life
Lord Henry FitzGerald married Charlotte Boyle Walsingham in London in August 1791. They lived together at Boyle Farm. They had twelve children, and their children used the last name FitzGerald-de Ros.
