Lordship and Barony of Balvaird facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Lordship and Barony of Balvaird is a special type of land ownership in Scotland. It's like a very old title connected to a specific area of land. The main place for this Lordship and Barony is Balvaird Castle, which is in a part of Scotland called Perthshire.

Long ago, one of the edges of this land was the River Farg. The Lordship was first officially given out on March 16, 1624. This happened through a special document called a Crown Charter. It was given to Lord Andrew Murray and described as "the lands and Barony of Balvaird." The name "Balvaird" has been spelled in many ways over time, like Balverd or Balward.

In 1673, another important document was created for the Lordship of Balvaird. This was for David Murray, 5th Viscount of Stormont. This document said that "all and whole various lands" were now part of the Lordship and Barony of Balvaird. It also included "the tower, fortalice and manor place of Balvaird," which means the castle and its main buildings.

The Barony of Balvaird is one of several old Scottish land titles. The person who held the title before was Alexander Murray, 9th Earl of Mansfield. He got it from his father, William Murray, 8th Earl of Mansfield, who passed away in 2015.

In 2017, the title was passed to the current Lord of Balvaird, an American named Brady Brim-DeForest. He now owns both Balvaird Castle and the special title of Lord of Balvaird.
