David Murray's Life and Politics
David Murray was the son of the 4th Viscount Stormont and Jean Carnegie. His family was well-known in Scotland.
Early Challenges and Loyalty
In 1689, David Murray was asked to attend a special meeting in Edinburgh. This was after a big change in power called the Glorious Revolution. He did not go to the meeting. Because of this, the Scottish government declared him a rebel.
A few years later, he was fined for not attending the Scottish Parliament. Even though he later promised loyalty to Queen Anne, he openly supported the Jacobite cause. He was against the Acts of Union 1707, which joined Scotland and England into Great Britain.
Supporting the Jacobites
Between 1705 and 1707, David Murray often communicated with Jacobite supporters. These supporters were in Scotland and France. In 1708, there was a plan for France to invade Britain. David Murray received instructions from James Francis Edward Stuart, who was the Jacobite claimant to the throne.
Because of this, the government in Edinburgh arrested him. He was held for three months. He was arrested again in 1715 during a Jacobite uprising. During this time, he hosted the Jacobite claimant at Scone Palace for three weeks. People described him as "rich, powerful and strongly determined" to help the Jacobite cause.
