David Murray, 6th Viscount of Stormont (born around 1690, died July 23, 1748) was an important Scottish nobleman. He held the title of Viscount of Stormont. A "Viscount" is a rank of nobility, like a duke or an earl, but usually a bit lower.

Who Was David Murray?

David Murray became the 6th Viscount of Stormont when his father, also named David, passed away in 1731. His mother was Marjory Scott.

His Family

David had several brothers. One of them was William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, who became a very famous judge. Another brother was James Murray, who supported the Jacobite cause.

In 1723, David Murray married Anne Stewart. She was the only daughter of John Stewart of Innernytie. David and Anne had four children together. They had two sons, one of whom was named David, just like his father and grandfather. This son later became the 2nd Earl of Mansfield. Their other son, James, sadly died without marrying. They also had two daughters, Anne and Marjory. Years later, in 1793, King George III gave Anne and Marjory special recognition. This meant they were known as Lady Anne and Lady Marjory.

His Political Views

David Murray, the 6th Viscount, had political beliefs that leaned towards the Jacobites. The Jacobites were people who supported the return of the Stuart royal family to the British throne.

He even wrote a poem about a Jacobite named John, Earl of Strathmore. This earl was killed in the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715. After the Jacobite rising of 1715, David Murray and his father were arrested. The British government suspected them of being Jacobites. They were held in prison for a short time.
