Loren Long is an American author and illustrator of children's books. He is very well known for his amazing illustrations. He won a special award called the Golden Kite Award in 2004. This award was for his illustrations in the picture book I Dream of Trains. Angela Johnson wrote that book.

About Loren Long
Loren Long was born in Joplin, Missouri, in 1964. He went to the University of Kentucky and earned a degree in Graphic Design. Today, he lives in Cincinnati, Ohio, with his wife and two sons.
How Loren Long Started His Career
Loren Long began his career working for Gibson Greeting Cards. This company is in Cincinnati, Ohio. Later, he started working as a freelance illustrator. This means he worked for himself and took on different projects. His freelance work helped him become known across the country for his children's book illustrations.
A person from Simon & Schuster, a big book publisher, saw his art. They saw his work for a book called Miles’ Song by Alice McGill. Because they liked his art so much, they asked him to illustrate I Dream of Trains. This book was written by Angela Johnson.
Awards and Recognitions
In 2004, I Dream of Trains won the Golden Kite Award for Picture Book Illustration. This was a big achievement for Loren Long. The next year, in 2005, he was honored again for his illustrations. This time it was for the book When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer by Walt Whitman.
In 2010, Loren Long illustrated a very special book. It was called Of Thee I Sing: A Letter to My Daughters. This book was written by Barack Obama, who was the President of the United States at that time.
Overcoming Challenges
When Loren Long was 12 years old, he found out something important about his eyesight. He learned that he was colorblind. This means he sees colors differently than most people. Even with this challenge, he creates beautiful and colorful illustrations. He uses strong lighting in his art. He also studies how colors work together. His family helps him a lot too. This shows that with hard work and support, you can achieve your dreams!
