Loreto's Past and Present
Years ago, Loreto was a much busier place. It had several important buildings that served the local people. These included a public school, a cheese factory, a tavern, a general store, and even a post office. All these businesses were located along Highway G.
However, over time, things changed. The public school, which was part of Joint District 9, closed its doors in 1962. After that, the other businesses in Loreto also stopped operating. Today, these buildings are no longer there.
What remains in Loreto is the Catholic parish of St. Patrick's. This includes a beautiful brick church, a rectory (where the priest lives), and a parish cemetery. The church is a central part of the community's heritage.
How Loreto Got Its Name
The name "Loreto" was given to the community in 1900. It was named by Reverend Felix Andrew Byrne. He was the postmaster for Loreto and also the pastor of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Reverend Byrne chose the name "Loreto" after Loreto, Italy. This is a famous town in Italy known for its religious significance. Sometimes, you might see the name spelled as "Loretto" or "Loreta," but "Loreto" is the most common spelling.
