Early Life and Beginnings
Lorna Doom, whose real name was Teresa Marie Ryan, grew up in Thousand Oaks, California. She went to Newbury Park High School. There, she became friends with Belinda Carlisle, who later became famous in the band The Go-Go's.
Joining The Germs
Lorna Doom was friends with the people who started The Germs, Darby Crash and Pat Smear. She joined the band even though she didn't have much musical experience at first. The band had put out a flyer looking for "two untalented girls" to join. This shows the unique and rebellious spirit of punk rock music.
She left the band in 1980. This happened after Darby Crash, the band's singer, let go of their drummer, Don Bolles. After Darby Crash's death, Lorna Doom moved to New York City. She lived there until the late 1990s.
Later Years and Recognition
A movie about The Germs was released in 2007. It was called What We Do Is Secret. In the movie, the actress Bijou Phillips played Lorna Doom.
The next year, in 2008, The Germs received a special honor. They got a star on the Guitar Center RockWalk. This is like a hall of fame for musicians. Lorna Doom was there for the ceremony.
Lorna Doom's Legacy
Lorna Doom passed away on January 16, 2019, from breast cancer. Many musicians remembered her important contributions to music.
Kira Roessler, another bass player, said that Lorna Doom was an "under-rated musician." She felt Lorna had a strong presence on her instrument. Kira also noted that The Germs influenced many more people than those who saw them play live. She believes Lorna's impact continues through that influence.
Guitarist Greg Hetson remembered seeing her play in the 1970s. He said she showed that "You can rock hard and you don't have to be a guy." This meant a lot for women in rock music.
Laura Jane Grace from the band Against Me! shared her thoughts. She tweeted about how much The Germs impacted her when she was young. She said few bands had such a big effect on her.
Flea, the famous bass player from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, also spoke about Lorna Doom. He said he loved listening to her play and imagined her rocking out. He felt a strong connection to her music and admired her greatly.
