Lorna Doone is a popular brand of golden, square-shaped shortbread cookie. These tasty cookies are made by Nabisco and are now owned by a company called Mondelez International. They first appeared in March 1912.
The Story Behind the Name
It's thought that Lorna Doone cookies were named after a famous book character. The book, also called Lorna Doone, was written by R. D. Blackmore in 1869. However, there are no exact records to confirm why the cookie got its name.
How They Started
The original recipe for Lorna Doone cookies came from Emily and John Malloy. They were a couple from County Cork, Ireland. The Malloys used to run their own bakery in Chicago. Emily was the one who created this special shortbread recipe.
When the Malloys closed their bakery, John sold Emily's recipe. He sold it to the F. A. Kennedy Steam Bakery. This bakery was also famous for making the first Fig Newton cookies back in 1891.
Lorna Doone in Cartoons
A box of Lorna Doone cookies even appeared in a cartoon! You can see them in Mickey's Surprise Party (1939). This cartoon short was an advertisement. It was made by Walt Disney Productions for Nabisco.
