Lorna Doone is a yummy, golden, square-shaped cookie. It's a type of shortbread cookie, which means it's made with lots of butter and has a crumbly texture. These cookies are made by Nabisco and are now owned by a company called Mondelez International. They first came out in March 1912.
The cookie might be named after a character from an old book! The book, written in 1869 by R. D. Blackmore, features a main character named Lorna Doone. However, no one knows for sure if this is why the cookie got its name.
How Lorna Doone Cookies Started
The original recipe for Lorna Doone cookies came from a bakery in Chicago. A couple named Emily and John Malloy ran this bakery. Emily was the one who created the delicious cookie recipe.
When their bakery closed down, John Malloy sold the special recipe. He sold it to the F. A. Kennedy Steam Bakery. This bakery was also famous for making the first Fig Newton cookies back in 1891.
Lorna Doone in Cartoons
Lorna Doone cookies even appeared in a cartoon! You can spot a box of Lorna Doone cookies in a cartoon from 1939. It was called Mickey's Surprise Party.
This cartoon was a special advertisement made by Walt Disney Productions for Nabisco. It was shown in theaters to promote the cookies.
