The Story of Lorna Doone Cookies
Lorna Doone cookies first appeared in 1912. They are a type of shortbread cookie. The name might come from a famous novel character. This character is from a book written in 1869 by R. D. Blackmore. However, no one knows for sure why the name was chosen.
There are different stories about how the recipe began. One story says a Nabisco employee sold his mother's Scottish shortbread recipe to the company. His mother was from Scotland.
Another story points to a bakery in Chicago. Emily and John Malloy ran this bakery. Emily created the original cookie recipe. When their bakery closed, John sold the recipe. It went to a company that also made Fig Newton cookies.
Lorna Doone in Pop Culture
Lorna Doone cookies have even appeared in cartoons! A box of these cookies was shown in Mickey's Surprise Party. This was a cartoon short from 1939. Walt Disney Productions made it for Nabisco.
In the TV show Modern Family, a character named Phil Dunphy says "Sweet Lorna Doone!" This happens in an episode called The Musical Man.
