Musical Career
Early Bands and The Parachute Club
In the late 1970s, Lorraine Segato was the singer for a rock band in Toronto called Mama Quilla II. The members of this band later formed The Parachute Club.
The Parachute Club became very popular in the 1980s. Segato helped write almost all of their songs, including their biggest hits. The band broke up in 1989. However, they got back together in 2005 and played shows until 2014.
Solo Work and Collaborations
After The Parachute Club first split up, Segato released her first solo album, Phoenix, in 1990. That same year, she worked with a group of Toronto musicians called Dance Appeal. They recorded a special song called "Can't Repress the Cause". The song was about getting more hip hop on Canadian radio.
Her second solo album, Luminous City, came out in 1998. She released her third album, Invincible Decency, in 2015.
Film, TV, and Theater
Segato has also worked in film. She wrote and directed a documentary called Queen Street West, The Rebel Zone. It was about the music and art scene in Toronto during the late 1970s and early 1980s. She also appeared in the documentary film The Pinco Triangle.
She made a guest appearance on the science fiction TV show Lexx. In one episode, she played a character called the "Time Prophet" and sang a song. Segato is also working on a one-woman play about her life called Get Off My Dress.
Important Performances and Honors
On August 27, 2011, Segato performed the famous Parachute Club song "Rise Up". The performance was at the state funeral for Canadian politician Jack Layton.
In 2014, The Parachute Club released a new dance remix of "Rise Up". This was to celebrate Toronto hosting the WorldPride festival.
On December 29, 2022, Segato was appointed to the Order of Canada. This is one of Canada's highest honors. She received it for her impact on Canadian music and for her work supporting equality and human rights.
