Early Music Years
Lorraine Segato first became known in the late 1970s. She was the singer for a Toronto rock band called Mama Quilla II. This band later formed the main part of The Parachute Club.
The Parachute Club
The Parachute Club was very active in the 1980s. Lorraine helped write almost every song the band released. This included all their popular singles. The band first broke up in 1989. However, a new version of the band, with Lorraine, started performing again in 2005. They continued to play shows until 2014.
Solo Work and Collaborations
After The Parachute Club first broke up, Lorraine released her own album. It was called Phoenix and came out in 1990. In the same year, she worked on a special song called "Can't Repress the Cause." This song asked for more hip hop music to be included in the Canadian music scene. She worked with a group of Toronto musicians called Dance Appeal for this project.
Her second solo album, Luminous City, was released in 1998. Her third solo album, Invincible Decency, came out in 2015. She is also working on a play about her life called Get Off My Dress.
Other Projects and Recognition
Lorraine has also worked in making films. She wrote and directed a documentary about the music scene in Toronto in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It was called Queen Street West, The Rebel Zone. She also appeared in another documentary film, The Pinco Triangle.
Lorraine is also a lecturer and works for social justice. She even appeared on a science fiction TV show called Lexx. She sang a song as a character called the "Time Prophet."
In 2011, she performed her band's famous song "Rise Up" at the state funeral of Jack Layton. He was a well-known Canadian politician. She was supported by a choir during this performance. In 2014, the band released a new dance remix of "Rise Up." This was for WorldPride when it was held in Toronto.
On December 29, 2022, Lorraine Segato was named to the Order of Canada. This is a very high honor in Canada. She received it for her important contributions to Canadian music and culture.
