Exploring Los Chavez: A Look at Its Past
Los Chavez is located on the west side of the Río Grande river. The community began in 1738. This was when Nicolás Durán y Chávez received a special land grant from Atrisco.
Early Settlement and Growth
By 1790, Los Chavez had grown quite a bit. It was made up of six small village areas, often called "plazas." The community was also included in the official census taken in 1802. This shows it was an established place even back then.
Los Chavez During the U.S. Army's Travels
In the fall of 1847, a group of the U.S. Army traveled through the area. They moved south along the west bank of the Río Grande. A soldier named Philip Gooch Ferguson noted that the west side of the river was better for finding water. He mentioned camping near a small town he called "Plaza Chavez."
