Los Guayos is a town located in Carabobo State, Venezuela. It's found northwest of Valencia Lake. This town is the main city of the Los Guayos Municipality and is part of the larger Valencia city area.

What's in a Name?

The name Los Guayos comes from an old Indian word, "uayos". This word referred to a type of rubbery material. It was taken from the bark of a tree called the huayales. Long ago, Caribs Indians lived in this area.

Where is Los Guayos?

The town of Los Guayos is part of the Los Guayos municipality. It has grown so much that it has almost joined with other nearby towns. The main highway connecting Caracas and Valencia is just to the north of Los Guayos. The Los Guayos River flows through the town from the northeast to the southeast.

A Look Back in Time

  • 1694: On February 20, Don Francisco Berroterán, who was the governor of Venezuela Province, officially named Los Guayos a "town of Indians." This area was home to a group of Indians called the Guayos.
  • 1710: On June 6, a priest named Mariano de Martí made Los Guayos a church parish. This meant it had its own church and priest.
  • 1751: People living in Los Guayos joined a big uprising. This protest was led by Francisco de León against a powerful trading company called the Compañía Guipuzcoana de Caracas.
  • 1812: During a war, Francisco de Miranda left soldiers in Los Guayos. Their job was to protect the road from Spanish forces. They fought a battle, but one of their officers left and joined the enemy. This caused Miranda's soldiers to scatter.

Places to See

The colonial church of San Antonio de Padua is also known as the church of Los Guayos. It is one of the oldest churches in all of Venezuela. The first building was built around 1650. It was originally a church for the local Indian people. The church's bell tower, with two areas next to it, was added in 1779.
