The Story Behind the Name
The name Los Silos first appeared in 1509. Back then, people in the area grew a lot of crops. They needed special buildings called silos to store their cereals. That's how the town got its name!
Nature and Wildlife in Los Silos
Los Silos is located in the heart of the Teno Massif, a beautiful mountain range. This area has a rich variety of plants and animals. It's a truly special place for nature lovers.
Forests and Coastal Plants
You'll find thick, green laurisilva woodlands here. These forests are very different from the flat coastal areas. Near the coast, you can still see small patches of cardones and tabaibas. These are unique plants that grow well in dry, sunny places.
Deep ravines cut through the land, connecting the high mountains to the coast. These natural pathways help different plants and animals move between areas.
The Monte del Agua Forest
One of the most important forests is the Monte del Agua. It's like a green treasure on Tenerife. This forest needs a lot of water to survive. It gets extra moisture from the "sea of clouds." This is a special cloud layer that forms when the Trade Winds blow across the island.
The Monte del Agua is one of the best examples of the Canarian Monte Verde forest. It's well-preserved because the land is very steep and has many deep ravines.
Special Birds of the Forest
This huge forest is home to some unique birds. You can find the white-tailed laurel pigeon and Bolle's laurel pigeon here. These birds are special because they are found only in the Canary Islands.
Protected Natural Areas
Because of its amazing nature, a large part of Los Silos is protected. These areas are part of the Canarian network of Protected Natural Spaces. They include:
- Parque Rural de Teno: A large rural park that protects the natural landscape.
- Site of Special Scientific Interest: An area important for scientific research due to its unique features.
- Los Acantilados de La Culata Protected Landscape: A beautiful coastal area with cliffs that is kept safe.
Old Footpaths and Trails
The landscape of Los Silos is criss-crossed by many old footpaths. These paths are lined with dry-stone walls. People from long ago built and improved these paths. They even paved the steepest parts with stones. This made it easier for animals like horses to walk on them. Today, these old paths have been restored. They are now great for hiking and exploring the area!
