Louden, Ohio facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Louden is a small, quiet place in Adams County, Ohio. It's what's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Louden sits about 784 feet above sea level.

Just east of Louden, you can find the famous Serpent Mound Historical Site. This amazing ancient earthwork is very close by, right on State Route 73. Louden Road also runs south from State Route 73, right through the heart of this little community.

The Story of Louden

Louden began as a small settlement around a store owned by a man named Lovett in 1839. It was never officially planned out like many towns are. Instead, it grew as Edmund Lovett, who was born in 1815, started selling small pieces of land for people to build their homes and shops.

The community got its name from Loudoun County, Virginia. Many of the first people who settled in Louden came from that area in Virginia. For a while, Louden even had its own post office, which was called Lovett's Post Office. It opened in 1844 and helped people send and receive mail until 1907. Early on, the name of the place was sometimes spelled "Loudon" instead of "Louden."
