A Brave Cavalry General
Louis-Pierre Montbrun started his army career in 1789. He began as a regular soldier, called a "trooper." He worked his way up through the ranks. He was very good at leading cavalry, which are soldiers who ride horses into battle. By 1800, he was given command of his own group of soldiers.
Rising Through the Ranks
Montbrun fought in the Battle of Austerlitz in December 1805. After this battle, he was promoted to a higher rank, General of Brigade. He continued to show great courage in battles in Germany and Poland.
In 1808, he was sent to Spain. He played a big part in the famous cavalry charge at the Battle of Somosierra in November 1808. Soon after, he was promoted again to General of Division. This meant he was in charge of an even larger group of soldiers.
Important Victories
In 1809, Montbrun's light cavalry division helped win important battles. These included the Battle of Eckmühl in April and the Battle of Raab in June. His cavalry was very fast and effective.
He returned to Spain by 1810. There, he fought in the Battle of Bussaco in September 1810. He also fought at the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro in May 1811. In these battles, he led the cavalry reserve for Marshal André Masséna.
His Final Battle
In 1812, General Montbrun was leading the II Cavalry Corps (Grande Armée). This was a large group of cavalry soldiers. He was killed at the very start of the Battle of Borodino. This major battle took place on September 7, 1812, in Russia.
