Louis Charles Latham was an American politician and lawyer. He was born on September 11, 1840, in Plymouth, North Carolina. He later served in the United States House of Representatives for North Carolina. He passed away on October 16, 1895, in Baltimore, Maryland.
Early Life and Education
Louis Latham went to college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from there in 1859. After college, he continued his studies at Harvard Law School. This is where he learned to become a lawyer.
Military Service
In 1861, Louis Latham joined the Confederate Army. This was during the American Civil War. He started as a captain. Later, he became a major in the First Regiment of North Carolina State troops. He served in the army throughout the entire war.
Law and Political Career
After the Civil War ended, Louis Latham went back to studying law. He officially became a lawyer in 1868. He then started his own law practice in Plymouth, North Carolina.
He also became involved in politics. In 1864, he was elected to the North Carolina House of Commons. This is a part of North Carolina's state government. A few years later, in 1870, he was elected to the North Carolina State Senate.
Louis Latham was a member of the Democratic Party. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives twice. His first term was from 1881 to 1883. He tried to be re-elected in 1882 but was not successful. He was elected again for a second term from 1887 to 1889. He tried to get re-elected in 1888 but did not win.
Later Life and Death
After his time in Congress, Louis Latham continued to practice law. He moved his law practice to Greenville, North Carolina. He died in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 16, 1895. He was buried in the City Cemetery in Greenville, North Carolina.
