Louis Cato, born on May 3, 1985, is a super talented musician. He leads the Late Show Band, which is the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Louis is a singer, songwriter, and producer. He can play many instruments like bass, guitar, drums, and brass instruments. He also makes his own music and has released three albums.

Louis Cato's Early Life
Louis Cato was born in Lisbon, Portugal, on May 3, 1985. His parents were African American. His father was working for the US military in Portugal at the time. A few months after Louis was born, his family moved to Albemarle, North Carolina, where he grew up.
Louis's mother was a church organist, and he started playing drums when he was only two years old! He later studied music at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended for two semesters before leaving in 2004.
Louis Cato's Music Career
Louis Cato met famous musician Marcus Miller at a jam session. This happened at the North Sea Jazz Festival. After that, they went on tour together for several years.
Joining The Late Show Band
In 2015, Louis joined the band Stay Human. This was when Stephen Colbert's Late Show first started. Louis often filled in as the bandleader when the main leader, Jon Batiste, was away.
In the summer of 2022, Jon Batiste took a break from the show. On August 12, he announced he would not be coming back. Louis Cato was then chosen to be the new leader of the house band. The band's name was changed to The Late Show Band. Louis officially took over on September 6, 2022. Stephen Colbert has called Louis a "musical genius." He said Louis can play almost any instrument.
Solo Music and Collaborations
Louis Cato released his first solo album, Starting Now, in 2016. It was released through RSVP Records. He wrote all the songs on this album with his writing partner, Adam Tressler.
In 2019, Louis toured Ireland as a drummer with musician Paul Brady. In 2020, he worked on an album called Mirrors. He lived and worked with Michael League and Justin Stanton from Snarky Puppy, Gisela João, and Becca Stevens. The musicians also formed a music group with the same name, Mirrors.
In August 2022, Louis Cato shared that he was finishing up his new album, Reflections. This album was released on August 11, 2023.
Louis Cato's Personal Life
In November 2012, Louis Cato was in a tour bus accident in Switzerland. He was with Marcus Miller at the time. Louis shared that he had injuries to his back and neck from the accident.
Louis Cato is a father and has two children.
