Louis Humphreys (born September 21, 1816 – died May 9, 1880) was an important person in American history. He was a doctor who helped soldiers during the American Civil War. He also served as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana for two terms, from 1868 to 1872.

Louis Humphreys was born in Springfield, Ohio. He later became a doctor, just like his older brother, Harvey. In 1844, Louis Humphreys moved to the city of South Bend, Indiana.
A Doctor During Wartime
During the American Civil War, Louis Humphreys played a special role. He was chosen by President Abraham Lincoln to be a medical inspector for the Union Army. This meant he helped make sure soldiers received good medical care. He was one of only eight people given this important job.
Leading South Bend
After the war, Louis Humphreys became involved in politics. He was a member of the Republican Party. From 1868 to 1872, he served as the second mayor of South Bend, Indiana. He held this important position for two terms.
A Community Helper
Louis Humphreys was also a leader in his community. He helped to organize South Bend's very first public library. This shows he cared about education and making resources available to everyone. His father had moved to the U.S. from Ireland when he was young.
