Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon (born November 16, 1725 – died March 4, 1793) was a French nobleman. He was the son of Louis Alexandre de Bourbon and Marie Victoire de Noailles. Louis Jean Marie was also a grandson of King Louis XIV of France.
From birth, he was known as the Duke of Penthièvre. He inherited many important titles from his father. He was known as the richest man in France during his lifetime. He was also famous for being very generous to people who were poor. He owned the land where the Royal Chapel of Dreux was later built.
His Family and Marriage
In 1744, the Duke of Penthièvre married Princess Maria Teresa Felicitas d'Este of Modena. She was the daughter of Francesco d'Este, the Duke of Modena.
The young couple lived in special apartments at the Palace of Versailles. These apartments were later given to the aunts of King Louis XVI of France.
The Duke and Duchess had seven children together. Sadly, only two of them lived past childhood:
- Louis Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Rambouillet (1746–1749)
- Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, "Prince of Lamballe" (1747–1768). He married Princess Marie Louise of Savoy. They did not have any children.
- Jean Marie de Bourbon, Duke of Châteauvillain (1748–1755)
- Vincent de Bourbon, Count of Guingamp (1750–1752)
- Marie Louise de Bourbon, Mademoiselle de Penthièvre (1751–1753)
- Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon, Mademoiselle d'Ivoy (1753–1821). She married Philippe d'Orléans. They had children.
- Louis Marie Félicité de Bourbon (1754–1754)
The Duchess of Penthièvre passed away in 1754, shortly after her last child was born. The Duke was very sad about losing his wife. He never married again, even though his wife's sister was suggested as a new wife for him.
Titles and How He Was Known
From November 16, 1725, to March 4, 1793, he was known as His Serene Highness The Duke of Penthièvre.
