Louis Alexandre de Bourbon (born September 6, 1747 – died May 6, 1768) was a French prince. He was the son of Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, the Duke of Penthièvre. Louis Alexandre was also a great-grandson of King Louis XIV. From the time he was born, he was known as the Prince of Lamballe. He passed away before his father and did not have any children.
Early Life and Family
Louis Alexandre was born on September 6, 1747, at the Hôtel de Toulouse in Paris. This was his family's home in the city. His father, Louis Jean Marie de Bourbon, was the Duke of Penthièvre. He was the only child of Louis Alexandre de Bourbon, who was a son of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan.
Louis Alexandre's mother, Princess Maria Teresa d'Este, was the daughter of the Duke of Modena. She was also related to the House of Orléans. Louis Alexandre was the only son of his parents who survived childhood. He was one of seven children in total.
When his older brother, Louis Marie de Bourbon, passed away, Louis Alexandre became the main heir to the large Penthièvre family fortune. This fortune included many lands and properties. The title Prince of Lamballe came from one of the areas his father owned. It was a special title of respect, not a ruling title or a legal one. His mother died in 1754 when she was only twenty-seven years old.
Marriage
Louis Alexandre's father chose his wife for him. She was an Italian princess named Maria Teresa Louisa of Savoy. Their wedding celebrations lasted from January 17 to January 27, 1767, with parties in Turin and Nangis.
Before the wedding, Louis Alexandre was very eager to meet his future wife. He secretly went to where Maria Teresa was staying. He dressed up as a simple country servant and gave her a bouquet of flowers, saying they were from his "master." The next day, during the wedding ceremony, the princess was surprised to find out that the humble man she had met was actually the prince himself. After the ceremony, Louis Alexandre and his new wife spent their honeymoon at the Château de Nangis.
His father had chosen Maria Teresa because she was known for being very religious and beautiful. He hoped that she would help his son change his wild lifestyle. Princess Maria Luisa was the sixth child of the Prince of Carignan. Her mother was Landgravine Christine Henriette of Hesse-Rotenburg. After about three months of happiness, Louis Alexandre grew tired of his young wife. He returned to his previous way of life, which saddened his father.
Later Life and Legacy
Louis Alexandre de Bourbon passed away on May 6, 1768. He died without having any children.
He was first buried in the family crypt at the 13th-century Saint-Lubin church in the village of Rambouillet. This church was near the Château de Rambouillet, which was his father's favorite home. In 1783, his father, the Duke of Penthièvre, sold the Rambouillet estate to his cousin, King Louis XVI.
On November 25 of that year, in a long religious procession, the Duke of Penthièvre moved the remains of nine family members. These included his parents, his wife Maria Teresa d'Este, and six of their seven children. They were moved from the small medieval church in Rambouillet to the chapel of the Collégiale Saint-Étienne in Dreux.
