Anne Jules de Noailles (born February 5, 1650 – died October 2, 1708) was a very important general for King Louis XIV. He was one of France's main military leaders towards the end of Louis XIV's long reign.
In 1689, he created his own army group called the Noailles regiment. He then led French forces in Spain during two big wars: the War of the Grand Alliance and the War of the Spanish Succession. Because of his success, he was given the highest military rank in France, becoming a marshal of France in 1693.
His Family and Life
Anne Jules de Noailles was the son of Anne de Noailles and Louise Boyer. When his father passed away in 1678, Anne Jules became the new duc de Noailles, which means Duke of Noailles.
He married Marie-Françoise de Bournonville, and they had many children together. His oldest son who lived to adulthood, Adrien-Maurice, took over the title of Duke after Anne Jules died.
One of his daughters, Marie Victoire, married a son of King Louis XIV. This son was the Comte de Toulouse, who was one of the King's children born outside of marriage.
Some of Anne Jules de Noailles's other notable children include:
- Marie Christine de Noailles (1672–1748), who married Antoine V de Gramont, another important French military leader.
- Adrien Maurice de Noailles (1678–1766), who became the 3rd Duke of Noailles. He married Françoise-Charlotte d'Aubigné, who was the niece of Madame de Maintenon, a very influential person at King Louis XIV's court.
- Lucie Félicité de Noailles (born 1683), who married Victor Marie d'Estrées, another Marshal of France.
- Marie Victoire de Noailles (1688–1766), who first married Louis de Pardaillan de Gondrin. After he died, she married his half-uncle, Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse, as mentioned earlier.
- Anne Louise de Noailles (born 1695) married twice. Her second marriage was to Jacques Hippolyte Mancini. The current Prince of Monaco, Albert II, is a descendant from this family line.
