Anne de Noailles, 1st Duke of Noailles (died February 15, 1678) was an important French nobleman. He was the great-grandson of Antoine, 1st comte de Noailles. Anne de Noailles played a key role in French history during the 1600s.
He was active during a time of civil unrest in France called the Fronde. This was a series of civil wars that happened when King Louis XIV was young. Anne de Noailles also served the king in the early years of Louis XIV's rule.
Becoming a Duke
Anne de Noailles became a very important person in France. He was made the captain-general of Roussillon. This was a province that France had recently won.
In 1663, King Louis XIV gave him a special title. He became the first Duke of Noailles. Being a Duke meant he was a very high-ranking noble. He also became a Peer of France. This was another important title that gave him special rights and duties in the kingdom.
His Family's Fame
Anne de Noailles had two sons who became very famous. They helped the Noailles family become even more well-known. His sons were Anne-Jules, 2nd duc de Noailles and Louis-Antoine, Cardinal de Noailles.
One of his grandsons married Françoise Charlotte d'Aubigné. She was the niece of Madame de Maintenon. Madame de Maintenon was a very influential woman at the court of King Louis XIV.
