Frédéric-François-Louis Perrier (born May 22, 1849 – died May 16, 1913) was an important Swiss politician. He was a member of the Swiss Federal Council, which is like the country's main government team, from 1912 to 1913. He holds the record for serving the shortest time in this high office, only 14 months.

Louis Perrier was born in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. He was the oldest child in his family. His father, Louis-Daniel Perrier, was also an architect.

When Louis was 19, he went to study in Stuttgart, Germany. He earned his degree in architecture from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich.

Perrier's Career as an Architect

Louis Perrier first gained experience working with his father. He also helped build the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in Sèvres, France.

After this, his real career as an architect began. He designed many important buildings. Two of his famous works include the University of Neuchâtel and the Hôtel des Postes de La-Chaux-de-Fonds.

Perrier's Political Journey

In 1889, Louis Perrier became a member of the Grand Conseil neuchâtelois. This was a local government group in his home area. Later, in 1902, he joined the Conseil national, which is part of the national parliament for Switzerland.

From 1903 to 1912, Perrier was a member of the Conseil d'Etat of Neuchâtel. This was like the main government for his canton (a Swiss state). He was part of the Free Democratic Party of Switzerland. He led the Conseil d'Etat twice, in 1905/1906 and again in 1909/1910.

Serving on the Federal Council

Louis Perrier was chosen to join the Federal Council on March 12, 1912. This is one of the highest positions in the Swiss government. Sadly, he passed away while still in office on May 16, 1913.

During his time on the Federal Council, he was in charge of different government areas:

  • The Department of Posts and Railways in 1912.
  • The Department of Home Affairs in 1913.

Military Service and Legacy

Even though he was busy with his career, Louis Perrier also had an impressive military career. He became a colonel in 1896. From 1902 to 1905, he commanded important military engineering units and forts.

Today, a street in Neuchâtel is named after him, called Quai Louis-Perrier.
