Her Life and Musical Journey

Louise Geneviève Rousseau was born in a town called Charenton, France. Her father, Charles-Louis Rousseau, was also a musician. She was also the great-niece of a famous thinker named Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Louise started learning piano from her father. She also studied with another teacher, Louis Joseph Saint-Amans. In 1821, when she was just 11 years old, she joined the Paris Conservatory. This was a very important music school.

She began teaching at the Conservatory around 1830. Later, she got married and moved to Cambrai. She had two children. In 1834, she moved back to Paris. There, she continued to teach music and write her own compositions. Sadly, Louise was not very healthy. She passed away in Paris when she was only 28 years old.

Her Musical Creations

Louise Geneviève de La Hye wrote many different kinds of music. These included an opera (a play set to music), cantatas (pieces for singers and instruments), and masses (religious music). She also composed pieces for the piano, duos (for two instruments), and string quartets (for four string instruments).

Here are some of her known works:

  • Le songe de la religieuse (This means 'The Nun's Dream')
  • Six mélodies italiennes (This means 'Six Italian Melodies')

After she passed away, a book she wrote was published. It was called Méthode d'orgue expressif, which was a guide on how to play the expressive organ.
