Louisiana, Kansas facts for kids
Louisiana (also known as Brooklyn and Salem) was once a small town in Douglas County, Kansas, United States. Today, it's known as a ghost town, which means it's a place where a town used to be, but now almost no one lives there.
History
Louisiana was started in 1855. It was a busy little town located right along the famous Santa Fe Trail. This trail was a very important path for travelers and traders in the old days.
The town offered many helpful things for people passing through. There was an inn where travelers could rest. There was also a saloon, a stable for horses, and a store to buy supplies. A post office was opened in Louisiana in 1856, but it closed just one year later in 1857.
On August 21, 1863, a group called Quantrill's Raiders attacked and destroyed the nearby city of Lawrence. After that terrible event, the Raiders rode through Louisiana. They burned almost the entire town to the ground. Only the saloon was left standing. The town of Louisiana disappeared soon after this attack.
