Louw de Graaf: A Life in Public Service
Louw de Graaf dedicated much of his life to helping people in the Netherlands. He worked as a leader in trade unions and later held several key positions in the Dutch government.
Starting with Trade Unions
Before becoming a politician, Louw de Graaf worked for the National Christian Trade Unions Federation. A trade union is an organization that helps protect the rights and interests of workers. He started working there in 1955. From 1970 until 1977, he served as the General-Secretary, which is a very important leadership role within the union. In this role, he helped guide the union's efforts to improve working conditions and pay for many people.
Entering Politics: State Secretary
After the national election in 1977, Louw de Graaf was appointed as a State Secretary for Social Affairs. He officially took office on December 28, 1977. A State Secretary is a government official who assists a minister in a specific department. In this case, he helped the Minister of Social Affairs with issues related to welfare and employment.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 1981, Louw de Graaf was elected as a Member of the House of Representatives. This is similar to being a member of parliament in other countries. Members of the House of Representatives help create and vote on laws for the country. He started this role on June 10, 1981.
Key Government Roles
Louw de Graaf held several significant roles in the Dutch government:
- Minister of Social Affairs and Employment: He served as the Minister of Social Affairs and Employment for a short time, from February 3 to May 6, 1987. This was an "ad interim" role, meaning he filled in temporarily. As a minister, he was in charge of policies related to jobs, social security, and welfare for the entire country.
- State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment (again): He returned to the role of State Secretary for Social Affairs and Employment from May 6, 1987, to October 1, 1989. In this position, he continued to work on important social and employment policies.
- Member of the Social and Economic Council: From 1970 to 1977, he was also a member of the Social and Economic Council. This council advises the Dutch government on important economic and social issues.
His Later Years
Louw de Graaf passed away on July 15, 2020, at the age of 90. He is remembered for his long career in public service, working to improve the lives of people in the Netherlands through his roles in trade unions and government.
