About Lovemore Majaivana
His Early Life and Music Journey
Lovemore Tshuma, also called Majaivana, was born in Gwelo (now Gweru). When he was four, his family moved to Bulawayo. There, he sang in the church choir, which his father led.
By the time he was 15, Lovemore was playing drums for a local band in Bulawayo called the Hi-Chords. Later, he moved to the capital city, Salisbury (now Harare). In Salisbury, he started singing in nightclubs. He would sing songs by famous artists like Tom Jones and Elvis Presley.
Lovemore's talent was clear from a young age. When he was 16, he and his friend Mtshapi even made their own drums. They used plastic and cardboard barrels. They played these drums at local places in Bulawayo for small fees. This hard work paid off, and soon Lovemore was playing on real drums.
He became the lead singer for the Hi-Chords. This band became very successful. They wore suits and looked professional. They traveled a lot and played at weddings and bigger venues. Lovemore loved to dance while he sang, which is how he got his nickname, Majaivana. The band covered popular songs from the 1960s.
Music in the 1970s and 1980s
In 1974, Lovemore formed his own band called Jobs Combination. They teamed up with a blind singer named Fanyana Dube. They released several successful songs. Their first album, Isitimela, sold many copies. After a while, the band broke up. Majaivana then sang with another group called the Real Sounds for a short time.
Later Music Career
A big moment in Lovemore's career happened when he joined a band called The Zulus. This band was from Victoria Falls and included two of his brothers. Having a stable band helped him a lot.
In 1984, Lovemore and The Zulus released an album called Salanini Zinini. This album featured traditional folk songs that he and his brothers learned from their mother. From then on, he started focusing more on traditional African music. His popularity grew a lot, especially in Matebeleland and Bulawayo, where the Northern Ndebele language is spoken. His first album released internationally came out in 1990.
Lovemore Majaivana left Zimbabwe in 2000. He then retired from making music.
