Loving is a small, unincorporated community in Young County, Texas, United States. It's also called a census designated place (CDP), which means it's an area identified by the U.S. Census Bureau for gathering population data. Loving is located on State Highway 114, about eighteen miles southeast of Olney.
History of Loving
Loving was started in 1907 on land that was once part of the Lost Valley Loving Ranch. This ranch belonged to Oliver Loving, who was the grandson of a very famous cattle drover also named Oliver Loving.
In 1909, the town of Loving moved about one mile north. This move was so it could be closer to the Gulf, Texas and Western Railroad, which was important for transportation and trade. B.B. Cain, a trustee for the Trinity Townsite Company, planned the new town on land bought from the Steadham brothers, a local ranching family.
Loving grew slowly but steadily through the early and middle 1900s. By 1930, the community had several churches, local businesses, its own school, and even a bank. The population reached its highest point in 1940 with 350 people. After that, the number of residents went down to 240 by 1980 and stayed around that level until 2000, when it increased slightly to 300 residents.
