Lowell A. Reed Jr. (born June 21, 1930 – died April 11, 2020) was an important judge in the United States. He served on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. This court handles many different legal cases in eastern Pennsylvania.

Early Life and Education
Lowell A. Reed Jr. was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He studied business at the University of Wisconsin and earned a degree in 1952. Later, he went to law school at the University of Wisconsin Law School. He then received his law degree (called a Juris Doctor) from Temple University Beasley School of Law in 1958.
Before becoming a lawyer, he served in the United States Navy. He was a Lieutenant Commander in Naval Intelligence from 1953 to 1957.
Reed's Legal Career
After law school, Lowell A. Reed Jr. worked as a law clerk for a judge in Philadelphia in 1958. A law clerk helps a judge with research and writing. From 1958 to 1962, he worked as a lawyer for an insurance company.
He then worked as a private lawyer in Philadelphia from 1963 to 1988. This means he helped many different people and businesses with their legal problems. He also taught law at the Temple University Beasley School of Law for many years.
Community Involvement
Before he became a judge, Reed was active in his community. He was elected to the school board for the Abington School District. He also led the Rydal-Meadowbrook Civic Association. This group works to improve the local area. He also served as an elder at his church.
Becoming a Federal Judge
President Ronald Reagan chose Lowell A. Reed Jr. to become a federal judge on December 18, 1987. The United States Senate approved his nomination on April 19, 1988. He officially became a judge on April 20, 1988.
He served as a judge until June 21, 1999, when he took on a special role called senior status. This means a judge can work a reduced schedule but still hear cases. Lowell A. Reed Jr. passed away on April 11, 2020, at the age of 89. He had been living with Parkinson's disease.
