Lowell Hill was a small mining town in California. It was located on a ridge, which is like a long, narrow hill. This ridge was between two waterways: Steephollow Creek and the Bear River.

The town was about 10 miles (16 km) east of Nevada City. It was also about 4 miles (6.4 km) north of a place called Alta. This distance is "as the crow flies," meaning in a straight line, like a bird would fly.

Exploring Lowell Hill's Past

Lowell Hill was part of a larger area known as Little York Township. It was also the main spot in what people called the Lowell Hill mining district. A "mining district" is an area where a lot of mining activity happens.

The Gold Channel

This area was famous for a special "channel" of gold-bearing ore. "Ore" is rock that contains valuable minerals, in this case, gold. A "channel" here means a long path or vein where the gold was found.

This rich gold channel stretched for many miles. It started around Remington Hill in the north. Then it went all the way down to the Bear River. From there, it even crossed over towards other mining areas like Dutch Flat and Alta.

What is a Mining Town?

A mining town like Lowell Hill was a community built around the search for valuable minerals. People moved there to dig for gold, and businesses grew to support the miners. These towns were often busy and exciting places during the "gold rush" times.

However, once the gold ran out, or it became too hard to find, people would often leave. This is why Lowell Hill is now considered a "former settlement." It's a place where a town once stood, but it's no longer a populated community.
