Lower Valley is a small, special place in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and buildings that isn't officially a town or city with its own government. It sits along a road called County Route 513, also known as High Bridge-Califon Road. You can find Lower Valley partly in Califon Borough and partly in Lebanon Township. It's located at the west end of a bigger area called Long Valley, which used to be known as German Valley. This area is a valley formed by the South Branch Raritan River, south of Schooley's Mountain.
History of Lower Valley
People started settling in the Lower Valley area a very long time ago, as early as 1735. By the late 1800s, this small community had grown to include a church, a schoolhouse, a post office, and about twelve houses.
The post office in Lower Valley opened in 1866. However, it was later renamed and moved to the nearby town of Califon in 1877. In 1918, some parts of Lower Valley, including its church and cemetery, officially became part of the Borough of Califon.
Lower Valley Presbyterian Church
The Lower Valley Presbyterian Church was built in 1871. The church group officially started in 1872. Many of its first members came from the Presbyterian Church in German Valley. The first pastor, or minister, was Reverend I. A. Blauvelt. He also preached at the church in German Valley.
Right next to the church is the Lower Valley Union Cemetery. Even though it's right beside the church, the cemetery is not officially connected to the church.
