Long Valley is a community in Washington Township, located in Morris County, New Jersey. It is known as a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's an area the government defines for counting people.

Long Valley was originally called German Valley. This name was used from when it was founded during the colonial era. However, the name was changed during World War I because of strong feelings against Germany at that time. In 2020, the population of Long Valley was 1,827 people.

A Look Back in Time

Long Valley has a long and interesting history. In 1705, many German families left their homes in Europe. They traveled to Holland and then sailed across the ocean to America. Their ship was meant to go to New York, but it ended up in Philadelphia instead.

From Philadelphia, these families traveled by land towards what is now Morris County, New Jersey. This area became known as "German Valley" because of these early settlers. They helped build the community that we now call Long Valley.
