Luarca is a beautiful town in Asturias, Spain. Its official name in Asturian is Ḷḷuarca. It is the main town in the Valdés area.
Luarca is a busy port where fishing boats and pleasure boats dock. In 2021, about 4,670 people lived here. The town is about 90 kilometers (56 miles) from Oviedo, the capital city of Asturias. A very famous scientist, Severo Ochoa, who won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1959, was born in Luarca. People love Luarca for its amazing buildings, pretty views, delicious food, and fun places to visit. The San Timoteo festival happens every August and brings thousands of visitors.
The Museo del Calamar Gigante (Giant Squid Museum) was once in Luarca. It was the only museum in the world dedicated to the giant squid. A storm destroyed it in 2014, but it reopened in a new spot in the town center in 2022.
