Lucas Fernández de Piedrahita (born in Bogotá in 1624 – died March 29, 1688) was an important leader in the Catholic Church. He was a bishop from a region once called New Granada, which is now Colombia. He served as the Bishop of Panamá from 1676 to 1688. Before that, he was the Bishop of Santa Marta from 1668 to 1676. He was also a well-known scholar.

A Look at His Life: Lucas Fernández de Piedrahita
Lucas Fernández de Piedrahita was born in a city called Santa Fe de Bogotá. His father was Domingo Hernández de Soto Piedrahita. His mother was Catalina de Collantes. Interestingly, his mother had Inca ancestors. He had one brother and two sisters.
Becoming a Bishop
In 1668, the King of Spain chose Lucas to become the Bishop of Santa Marta. Pope Clement IX officially agreed to this choice. A year later, in 1669, he was made a bishop by Antonio Sanz Lozano. Being "consecrated" means he was officially set apart for his special role in the church.
In 1676, he was chosen again by the King of Spain for a new role. This time, he became the Bishop of Panamá. Pope Innocent XI confirmed this appointment. He worked as the Bishop of Panamá until he passed away in 1688. He also helped to make another person, Sancho de Andrade de Figueroa, a bishop.

Lucas Fernández de Piedrahita was not just a religious leader. He was also a scholar. He wrote a lot about the Muisca. These were the people who lived in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense region before the Spanish arrived. His writings helped people learn a lot about their history and culture.
