Lucas Valley is a beautiful valley located in Marin County, California. It's a quiet area with homes and natural spaces. A creek called Miller Creek flows through the valley. This creek eventually drains into San Pablo Bay to the east. Lucas Valley is also home to a small community. This community is part of a larger area called the Lucas Valley-Marinwood CDP.

A main road named Lucas Valley Road runs through the entire valley. This road connects Lucas Valley to other nearby valleys. To the east, it links to Gallinas Valley. To the west, it connects to Nicasio Valley. Interestingly, some parts of the suburban areas often called Lucas Valley are actually located in Gallinas Valley. This is according to official maps from the United States Geological Survey.

A Look Back at Lucas Valley's History

Early Days and Land Ownership

Long ago, Lucas Valley was part of a very large piece of land. This land was given as a "grant" by the government. On February 14, 1844, a man named Timothy Murphy received this huge land grant. It was about 21,678 acres (8,773 hectares) in size.

Later, in 1853, John Lucas inherited a part of this land. This section was known as the Santa Margarita rancho. Lucas Valley was included within this inherited land. The valley and its main road were named after this 19th-century rancher, John Lucas.

George Lucas and Skywalker Ranch

Many people know the famous film director George Lucas. He is the creator of the Star Wars movies. In 1978, George Lucas started buying land in this area. He wanted to build his film production facility, which is known as Skywalker Ranch.

It's a common misunderstanding that Lucas Valley is named after George Lucas. However, this is not true! Lucas Valley Road and the valley itself were named after John Lucas. He was the rancher from the 1800s. George Lucas and John Lucas are not related to each other.
