After his father passed away in 1814, John inherited a lot of land in Scioto County. He decided to establish the town of Lucasville on some of this land on August 7, 1819. John and his wife, Mary, ran a tavern in Lucasville until John's death in 1825. He is buried in the Lucasville Cemetery.
