Playing Career Highlights
Starting Out in Argentina and Italy
Luciano Galletti was born in La Plata, Argentina. His football journey began at Estudiantes de La Plata, a club where his father, Rubén Horacio Galletti, also played as a right-wing forward in the 1970s. In his second season with Estudiantes, he scored one goal in 24 games in Argentina's top league.
In January 1999, Galletti moved to Italy to join Parma A.C.. However, he didn't get to play much for their main team. Later that year, he moved to S.S.C. Napoli, a club in Italy's second division, on loan from Estudiantes. He then returned to Estudiantes for the 2000–01 season.
Time with Real Zaragoza
In 2001, Galletti signed with Real Zaragoza in Spain. He played his first game in La Liga, Spain's top league, on August 26, which was a 1–2 loss against RCD Espanyol. In his first year, he played 27 matches and scored two goals, but the team was relegated to a lower league.
After that, Galletti became a very important player for Zaragoza. He played in at least 34 games each season he was there. In the 2003–04 season, he helped his team win the Copa del Rey, which is a major Spanish cup competition. He scored the winning goal in extra time during a thrilling 3–2 victory against Real Madrid.
Playing for Atlético Madrid
On July 29, 2005, Galletti joined another Spanish team, Atlético Madrid, for €4 million. He scored his first league goal for Atlético on October 27 in a 3–0 home win against Cádiz CF.
In his second season with Atlético Madrid, Galletti scored four goals in 36 games. The team finished in seventh place in the league that year.
Success with Olympiacos
On June 30, 2007, Galletti moved to Olympiacos F.C. in Greece. The transfer fee was reported to be €2.5 million, and he signed a four-year contract. On May 2, 2009, he scored Olympiacos' fourth goal in the Greek Cup final against AEK Athens F.C., giving his team a 4–3 lead. He was sent off shortly after, but his team still won the game and the title after a penalty shootout.
After that season, where he scored a career-high 14 goals and helped Olympiacos win the national championship, he signed a new contract until 2013.
Health Challenges and Return
In early February 2010, Galletti was diagnosed with a serious kidney problem. This meant he had to miss the rest of the 2009–10 season. He announced his retirement from football that summer when he was only 30 years old. However, in October 2012, he had a successful kidney transplant. His father, Rubén, was the donor.
After a short time playing for OFI Crete FC, Galletti returned to Olympiacos on September 3, 2014. He took on a new role as a scout for players in Latin America.
International Career
Galletti was a top player for Argentina's youth teams. He was the top scorer at the 1999 South American Youth Championship, scoring nine goals in just eight games. He scored more goals than famous players like Ronaldinho and Roque Santa Cruz. His Argentina under-20 team won the competition in Paraguay.
He played 13 games for the senior national team. He made his debut in 2000. He was chosen for the squad that played in the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup. He played three matches in that tournament, including the final against Brazil, where Argentina finished as runners-up.
