Lucius Edward William Plantagenet Cary, born on May 8, 1935, is known as the 15th Viscount of Falkland. A Viscount is a noble title, ranking below an Earl and above a Baron. He is a British nobleman and used to be a politician. From 1961 to 1984, he was called the Master of Falkland.

Early Life and Education

Lucius Cary is the youngest of three children. He is the only son of Lucius Cary, who was the 14th Viscount of Falkland. His mother was Constance Mary Berry. The title of Viscount Falkland is very old. It was created in 1620 by King James VI of Scotland. This makes it the oldest Viscount title in Scotland.

Lucius Cary went to Wellington College in Berkshire, England. After his education, he became an officer in the Hussars, which is a type of cavalry regiment in the British Army.

Political Journey in the House of Lords

Lucius Cary became the Viscount in 1984 after his father passed away. This meant he could join the House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the UK Parliament. It is where important laws are discussed and approved.

Joining Political Parties

When he first joined, he was part of the Social Democratic Party. Later, he became a member of the Liberal Democrats. In 1999, a new law changed how the House of Lords worked. Most hereditary peers, who inherited their titles, were no longer allowed to sit there. However, 92 of them were elected to stay. Lucius Cary was one of these elected peers.

Becoming a Crossbencher

In 2011, Viscount Falkland left the Liberal Democrats. He then became a crossbencher. A crossbencher is a member of the House of Lords who does not belong to any political party. They sit on benches across from the government and opposition parties. This means they can vote on issues based on their own views, not party rules. He continued as a crossbencher until he retired in March 2023.

Supporting Important Causes

Viscount Falkland supports Humanists UK. This group promotes humanism, which is a way of life focused on human values and reason. Since 2015, he has also been a vice-president of the Royal Stuart Society. This society is interested in the history of the Stuart royal family. His family has historical ties to the Jacobites, who supported the Stuart kings.

Viscount Falkland has been married twice and has five children.
