Lucius Edward William Plantagenet Cary, 15th Viscount of Falkland (born 8 May 1935) is a British nobleman and former politician. From 1961 to 1984, he was known as the Master of Falkland.
Early Life and Education
Lucius Cary is the oldest of four children. He is the only son of Lucius Cary, 14th Viscount of Falkland, and Constance Mary Berry. The title of Viscount of Falkland is a very old one in the Peerage of Scotland. It was first created in 1620 by King James VI.
Cary went to school at Wellington College in Berkshire, England. Before his political career, he served as an officer in the Hussars, which is a type of cavalry regiment in the British Army.
Political Career
Lucius Cary became the Viscount of Falkland in 1984 after his father passed away. This allowed him to become a member of the House of Lords. The House of Lords is part of the UK Parliament.
He first joined the Social Democratic Party. Later, he became a member of the Liberal Democrats. In 1999, a new law changed how the House of Lords worked. Most "hereditary peers" (people who inherited their titles) were no longer allowed to sit there. However, Lucius Cary was one of ninety-two hereditary peers who were elected to remain in the House of Lords.
In 2011, Viscount Falkland left the Liberal Democrats. He then sat as a Crossbencher, which means he did not belong to any specific political party. He retired from the House of Lords in 2023. He supports Humanists UK, an organization that promotes humanism. Since 2015, he has also been a vice-president of the Royal Stuart Society.
