Why the Lucky Frog Was Made
This amazing frog sculpture was ordered specially for the opening of the casino. It was a way to say "thank you" to the city of Madrid. For 90 years, playing games of chance (like at a casino) was not allowed in the city. The sculpture celebrated that it was now legal again.
Unveiling the Sculpture
The Lucky Frog was officially shown to the public on April 3, 2014. A famous journalist named Carme Chaparro and an actor called Paco León helped to reveal it.
Symbols of Good Fortune
Frogs are often seen as a sign of good luck, especially in a traditional Chinese practice called Feng shui. This sculpture is covered in symbols of good luck from all over the world.
What the Symbols Mean
The frog's belly has 34 different symbols carved into it. These include numbers, a scarab (an ancient Egyptian beetle symbol), a four-leaf clover, the peace sign, and various symbols for money and different religions.
The Frog's Special Color
The sculpture is made of bronze, but it has a special turquoise green color. This color comes from a protective layer called a patina. A specialist named Juan Manuel González applied this coating. The turquoise green color is also thought to bring good luck.
Where to Find the Lucky Frog
The Lucky Frog is located close to another famous bronze sculpture. This one is called Woman with Mirror and was made by Fernando Botero. The frog sculpture also faces the grand Monument to Columbus.
