Lucrècia Arana (born in Haro, Spain, on November 23, 1871 – died in Madrid, Spain, on March 9, 1927) was a famous Spanish singer. She had a special voice that could sing both high (soprano) and low (contralto) notes. People remember her for her unique style in a type of Spanish musical play called zarzuela.

Her Life Story

Lucrècia Arana's father passed away when she was only one year old. This happened during a conflict known as the Third Carlist War. As a young woman, she moved to Madrid, the capital city. There, she took singing lessons from the best teachers of her time.

In 1887, when she was just fifteen, Lucrècia started her singing career. Her first role was a small part in a play called "La mascota." She performed at the Teatro Price in Madrid. Later, she joined the Julian Romea company. With this group, she traveled and performed in many places across Spain, including her hometown.

From 1896 to 1898, Lucrècia was a star at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid. This was a very important theater for zarzuela performances.

In 1908, Lucrècia married Mariano Benlliure, a famous sculptor. After her marriage, she decided to stop performing on stage.

Lucrècia Arana passed away in 1927 from a stroke at her home. She was buried in the Cemetery of San Justo in Madrid. Her husband, Mariano Benlliure, created a special medal with her image on it. This medal is now given as a prize to the best singer at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, a famous music school.
