Ludovic Lloyd was a Welsh writer and courtier who lived a long time ago, between about 1573 and 1610. He was known for writing poems and putting together collections of different writings.

About Ludovic Lloyd

Ludovic Lloyd was born in Wales. He was the fifth son of Oliver Lloyd, who was a lord in Marrington, Shropshire, England. His mother was Gwenllian, from Gregynog, Montgomeryshire, Wales.

In his writings, Ludovic Lloyd said he was a sergeant-at-arms. This was an important job serving the queen. He worked for Queen Elizabeth I. After she passed away, he continued in the same job for King James I.

Ludovic Lloyd was also a close friend of another poet named John Lane. He often dedicated his books to important people at the royal court.

Ludovic Lloyd's Writings

Ludovic Lloyd wrote several books and collections. His most important collection was called The Pilgrimage of Princes. This book included special poems written by other writers, like Edward Grant and Thomas Churchyard, praising his work.

Here are some of his other works:

  • The Consent of Time, Deciphering the Errors of the Grecians in their Olympiads (1590). This book was about how the ancient Greeks kept track of time. He dedicated it to John Whitgift.
  • The Triplicitie of Triumphs (1591). This work described the grand parties, ceremonies, and games held when emperors were born.
  • A Brief Conference of Divers Lawes (1602). This book talked about different laws and rules. He dedicated this one to Queen Elizabeth.
  • The Stratagems of Jerusalem (1602). This book was about military laws and how armies were organized, both for Jewish and non-Jewish groups. He dedicated it to Sir Robert Cecil.
  • The Practice of Policy (1604). This book likely shared ideas about how to govern and make good decisions.
  • The Choice of Jewels (1607). This book contained special poems. Some of these poems were written so that the first letter of each line spelled out a message. They wished "Health" to Anna, Queen of Great Britain. The book also congratulated Christian, King of Denmark, who visited England in 1607.
  • The Tragicomedie of Serpents (1607). This was a collection of stories, mostly from ancient myths and the Bible. He dedicated this book to King James I.
  • Linceus Spectacles (1607). This book was similar to The Tragicomedie of Serpents. It was also dedicated to King James I.
  • Hilaria, or the Triumphant Feast for the fifth of August (1607). This book celebrated the day King James I was crowned.
  • The Jubile of Britane (1607). This work also celebrated an important event for Britain.

Another poem by him was in Thomas Twyne's translation of Humphrey Llwyd's Breviary of Britayne in 1573.
